Rutland County at a Glance...
Rutland County represents 28 towns which are home to approximately 70,000 residents. The Rutland region has a diverse employment base as compared to other areas of Vermont. We have more than 100 manufacturers, ranging in size from General Electric Aircraft Engines (heavy industry) with approximately 1,400 employees to smaller operations with a few employees. The composition of our employment base varies widely, from G.E. to American Skiing Company (Killington and Pico Ski Resorts), Rutland Regional Medical Center and the public sector, six supervisory union districts, and the State of Vermont.
Vermont still has active natural resource based industry, primarily in marble, slate, limestone, and lumber.
The Rutland County labor force numbered more than 30,000 people as of the end of 1997. The labor pool available to Rutland County employers within an hour commute is estimated at 80,000.
