RRCC/REDC Wrap Up Legislative Session

bustrip.jpgRRCC joined forces with REDC again to represent business interests and concerns in the State House this legislative session. Our joint Public Policy Committee led by Larry Jensen started in December by releasing our annual Public Policy Statement (the document outlining our top business priorities) at our Legislative Reception sponsored by Comcast.

We followed up throughout the session with four public breakfasts in our Legislative Breakfast Series sponsored by TD Bank and our Legislative Bus Trip and Luncheon in Montpelier sponsored by Omya.  We also recorded all the breakfasts for broadcast on PEGTV.

Here are ten of the Senate and House bills we followed and the outcome:

*S.288 Known as the “jobs” bill; we supported most portions – bill passed

*S.290 Unemployment Trust Fund; we supported most portions – bill passed

8S.266 Workers’ Compensation; we opposed all – bill did not advance

*S.286 Challenges For Change; we opposed several portions – modified bill passed

*Continued operation of Vermont Yankee; we supported – Senate opposed

*H.323 Riparian Buffer Zones; we strongly opposed – bill failed

*H.763 River Corridor Management; we strongly opposed and advocated for a veto by the Governor – bill passed / Governor signed

*H.484 – Toxic Substance; we opposed – bill did not advance

*H.661 – Tax of certain internet sales; we opposed – bill did not advance

*H.382 – Paid absence from work; we opposed – bill did not advance

We would like to thank all the members of the Public Policy Committee and the entire Rutland County delegation for working with us throughout the session.

RRCC May Mixer

Workers' Comp Corner

Safety - BIGGEST Cost Saver

The #1 way to reduce workers' compensation costs and claims is through safety and training. Safety measures, training and experience all contribute to a reduction in work injuries. Each employer should review their reports of injury and the nature of injuries in their workplace or profession and target those injuries for additional safety training. Training is only the first step. Providing guidelines, safety equipment, followed by enforcement, reminders and consequences for not following safety protocol can all serve to reduce injuries. Common work practices may actually contribute to injuries. Understaffing can impose too strenuous a workload on existing workers. Overtime can exacerbate and contribute to repetitive use or overexertion injuries. Inadequate training can result in improper or dangerous work procedures. Taking the time and effort to properly train and enforce safety can reduce injuries and costs.

Workers Comp Corner is sponsored by Poulos Insurance: For more information or rates on Workers' Compensation or any other business insurance contact Chuck Rose at Poulos Insurance, 802-775-4443.
